Napa Valley's Beringer Vineyards won the highest honor at the 2002 San Francisco International Wine Competition, the "Bon Appetit Magazine Winery of the Year," for the first time, taking the coveted cov·et

 prize over 917 other wineries. Total number of wines entered was 3,810; this was a record number for the event, making it the biggest wine competition in the world. The event took place the weekend of June 21-23 at San Francisco's Park Hyatt Hotel.

La Crema Winery, owned by Kendall Jackson, won the "Andre Tchelistcheff Winemaker of the Year" award. This award is given to a small production winery; La Crema won 9 medals out of 11 wines entered, including one double gold and two gold medals.

In all, 82 double gold medals and 134 gold medals were awarded from a group of 918 wineries representing 26 states and 21 countries.

Two wineries shared the honor of winning three double gold medals: Gallo of Sonoma which had won three past "Winery of the Year" awards, took double golds for its '97 Cabernet Sauvignon, Northern Sonoma County; '94 Cabernet Sauvignon Ernest & Julio "Estate"; and the '97 Cabernet Sauvignon, Barrelli Vineyards, Alexander Valley.

Canada's Jackson-Triggs also won three double golds for its 2000 Riesling Eiswein, Niagara Peninsula, 2000 Red Meritage and 2001 Riesling Eiswein, Proprietors Reserve, Okanagan Valley.

Anthony Dias Blue, director of the wine competition, thanked the San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau for sponsoring the event, the judges and all the wineries that participated. We hope it will remain the preeminent wine judging in the world."
