Bergen Kommune Selects Winternals Defrag Manager 3.0 to Defragment its 11,000 System Windows Enterprise; Defrag Manager 3.0 Boosts System Performance, Reduces Help Desk Calls.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Winternals Software, a leading provider of Microsoft systems availability and performance solutions, today announced that Bergen Kommune, Norway, has chosen Winternals Defrag Manager 3.0 as the network defragmentation See defragment.  solution for approximately 11,000 Windows 2000 servers and workstations citywide. The product was selected for its ability to increase application and system performance, and reduce support requirements.

Defrag Manager 3.0 is a scalable enterprise defragmenter that eliminates file system bottlenecks throughout an organization's IT infrastructure. As a fully automated solution, it allows administrators to manage the defragmentation of any size network from a single installation on one PC.

With 235,000 residents, Bergen Kommune is the second-largest city in Norway and a renowned center for oil exploration, shipping, environmental and oceanographic research. The city's IT staff maintains the computer infrastructure for government offices and public schools at approximately 600 locations. Defrag Manager 3.0 is being implemented to optimize the performance of servers and desktop computers throughout the city.

"We use Systems Management Server to install computers and deploy software," said Olav Sunde Olav Sunde (17 August 1903 - 10 November 1985) was a javelin thrower from Oslo, Norway. He represented IK Tjalve.

He won the bronze medal at the 1928 Summer Olympics with a throw of 63.97 metres. At the 1932 Summer Olympics he finished ninth with 60.81 metres.
, Data Center Team Leader at Bergen Kommune. "We discovered that it leaves hard disks very fragmented. This is in addition to the fragmentation that occurs during normal business use. When our end-users' machines started running slowly, it became evident that fragmentation was a problem. After running Defrag Manager, I observe significant performance increases on the clients."

Another reason cited by Sunde for deploying Defrag Manager 3.0 is the anticipated reduction in help-desk calls that will occur at Bergen Kommune when using the product. "Defragmentation is an essential part of systems maintenance," he said. "And when a machine is properly maintained, most problems are eliminated. That means less tickets submitted to the help desk."

Defrag Manager 3.0's boot-time optimization feature also factors into Bergen Kommune's purchase of the product. This process automatically defragments the paging files and Registry hives hives (urticaria), rash consisting of blotches or localized swellings (wheals) of the skin, caused by an allergic reaction (see allergy). The swelling is caused by distention of the skin capillaries and escape of serum and white cells into the skin and tissues.  of remote systems using a method that is 100% compliant with Windows file system APIs for safety. Defrag Manager 3.0 is the only network defragger See defragment.  that maintains Windows API The Windows API, informally WinAPI, is the name given by Microsoft to the core set of application programming interfaces (APIs) available in the Microsoft Windows operating systems.  compliance in all modes of operation.

"Boot-time defragmentation is quite important because there's a lot of activity that occurs between applications and the Registry while a server is running," Sunde said. "I notice considerable performance improvements on servers that have the Registry properly defragged at boot time The time it takes for a device to be ready to operate after the power has been turned on. About Defrag Manager 3.0

Defrag Manager 3.0 remotely schedules, deploys, monitors and controls defragmentation throughout a Windows-based network from a single console, without any manual client installations. It deploys a low-system-overhead defrag agent to each client according to according to

a schedule that the administrator designates. The agent utilizes a proprietary defragmentation algorithm that automatically completes the defrag process, and then removes itself from each system. No new, continuously-running services are required.

All defragmentation tasks are controlled and configured from one system, regardless of the number of computers in the network or the physical location of the machines -- including mobile systems disconnected from the network. Administrators can schedule defragmentation for a single PC, a group of computers, an Active Directory Organization Unit, or an entire domain with a single drag-and-drop.
