 of Comigor leaves her royal surroundings to live a life in exile after her husband, Karon, and her newborn child are murdered as sorcerers. Due to the dangerous history of magic use in the Four Realms, its practice is now forbidden and all sorcerers are hunted down and murdered. While in exile, Seri encounters a dangerous fugitive in need of shelter. She tries many ways of communicating with the stranger but only when using long-lost phrases from the mystical J'Ettanne does he seem to recognize some of her speech.
