No identified attacks surfaced, and the GOP network successfully powered what was likely the largest demonstration of Internet-fueled political organizing in history. Still, the threat was real: in the weeks prior to the convention, speakers at top computer hacker conventions -- HOPE 2000 and DefCon - reportedly mentioned the high-profile GOP event as a potential target, according to according to

In practice, many of these groupings may overlap.  and networks are inherently insecure, and politics certainly creates motive to exploit these vulnerabilities for maximum effect on the national stage," said Ken Bywaters, who heads Berbee's Security Services Security services are state institutions for the provision of intelligence, primarily of a strategic nature, but also including protective security intelligence. A two-engineer incident response team from Berbee -- Chris Gerg and Tom Callaci - traveled to the convention following an urgent request to help increase network protection. Once in Philadelphia, the team conducted a rapid assessment of existing network vulnerability, followed by installation of fixes to eliminate potential points of unauthorized entry. Finally, the Berbee team designed and implemented a sophisticated Intrusion Detection System This article is about the computing term. For other uses, see Burglar alarm.

Among the many challenges faced by the Berbee team was the constant addition of new data lines and access points, as GOP officials strived to provide access and information to throngs of Internet media, political organizations, and Republican faithful monitoring the GOP event on home computers.

"This is what we do everyday, but it was impossible not to think about the national significance of this particular job," said Berbee's Chris Gerg. "But like any corporate engagement, we relied on our experience and our instincts to get the job done."
