Bentley ships MicroStation 95 for UNIX.EXTON, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 18, 1996-- Company renews unique multi-platform strategy and offers "most popular MicroStation ever" to entire enterprise Bentley Systems Bentley Systems, Incorporated, provides software for the "Design, construction and operation of the world's infrastructure". The company’s software serves the building, plant, civil, and geospatial vertical markets in the areas of architecture, engineering, construction (AEC) Inc., today began shipment of UNIX UNIX Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics). versions of MicroStation(R) 95, the company's popular productivity upgrade to MicroStation V5. MicroStation 95 dramatically increases user productivity and readies user environments for the latest MicroStation applications. Specifically, MicroStation 95 for UNIX includes a streamlined graphical user interface graphical user interface (GUI) Computer display format that allows the user to select commands, call up files, start programs, and do other routine tasks by using a mouse to point to pictorial symbols (icons) or lists of menu choices on the screen as opposed to having to , the new Bentley patent pending AccuDraw(TM) drawing technology, and the multi-platform MicroStation BASIC language. This announcement renews Bentley's ongoing commitment to providing users a choice of platforms and the full opportunity to leverage all platform advances. The company highlighted the installed base, enterprise-wide needs, and Internet plans of its users as the key motivators behind its continued support of UNIX. Shipment of MicroStation 95 for UNIX follows the announcement from design market software publisher Autodesk Corporation (NASDAQ NASDAQ in full National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations U.S. market for over-the-counter securities. Established in 1971 by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), NASDAQ is an automated quotation system that reports on : ADSK ADSK Autodesk, Inc. Yoav Etiel, senior vice president of marketing at Bentley, says, "Our users have engineering lifecyles that thread through the entire enterprise and can last for decades. They are asking for a flexible platform approach that is consistent with their corporate IT and Internet strategies." He adds, "Also, with the shipment of MicroStation 95 for UNIX, users have the opportunity to be their most productive. They can now choose freely from high-performance workstations from Sun, IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) , HP, and SGI (SGI, Sunnyvale, CA, www.sgi.com) A manufacturer of workstations and servers, founded in 1982 by Jim Clark. The company was founded as Silicon Graphics, Inc., but changed to its acronym in 1999. ." Mark Tolliver, vice president of market development at Sun Microsystems Sun Microsystems, Inc. Computer Company, comments, "We applaud Bentley for reaffirming its multiple-platform strategy." He adds, "IT professionals want free choice in leveraging investments now and in the future. Bentley is showing strong strategic and technological leadership for the engineering market." MicroStation 95 is already the most popular MicroStation ever. Over 70,000 users have received the upgrade and over 500 developers worldwide have products supporting or optimized for MicroStation 95. Bentley's commitment to a smooth transition to MicroStation 95 for the existing base of over 220,000 MicroStation users can also be credited for the strong demand for the upgrade. All additions were made with no changes to the file formats of V5. MicroStation 95 can co-exist and share all data with existing MicroStation V5 products, leveraging user investment in existing data. Users can upgrade their seats incrementally, with minimal downtime and as project schedules permit. MicroStation 95 now supports DOS, Windows, Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. (R), the Apple Power Macintosh, and UNIX platforms. The product's feature set and data files are identical across all platforms, making a multi-platform engineering environment easy to operate and maintain. Bentley is able to support this broad range of operating system choices because its MDL MDL - (Originally "Muddle"). C. Reeve, Carl Hewitt and Gerald Sussman, Dynamic Modeling Group, MIT ca. 1971. (TM) (MicroStation Development Language) technology provides a common environment for MicroStation products, reducing the effort to support many platforms. In fact, under 10% of their software development effort is devoted to porting. It has been the experience of Bentley that UNIX systems, including those from Sun Microsystems, Silicon Graphics, Hewlett-Packard, and IBM, play a major role in engineering and related organizations and must be considered in nearly every lifecycle. Other new capabilities in MicroStation 95 for UNIX include improved printing and plotting performance, advanced management of reference files (including support of binary and continuous tone raster format files), improved performance of hidden-line removal, keyframe animation, a new archive facility, and record/playback/editing of MicroStation BASIC programs.
