Bentley adds raster editing to MicroStation Descartes; Newest version of engineering imaging gets raster editing and 'clean-up' capabilities for binary, color, and continuous tone scanned images.

ANAHEIM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 19, 1996--A/E/C SYSTEMS '96 --Bentley Systems, Inc. (Exton, PA) today announced that raster editing features have been added to MicroStation Descartes(TM), its integrated, high-performance engineering imaging product. Unlike other systems, these editing or "clean-up" capabilities work with all scanned images: black and white, color, and continuous tone.

Imaging and MicroStation Descartes are used by engineers and mappers to improve designs, plan more effectively, and present ideas more realistically. Users convert "real-world" images, such as maps, aerial photographs, and satellite imagery Satellite imagery consists of photographs of Earth or other planets made from artificial satellites. History
The first satellite photographs of Earth were made August 14, 1959 by the US satellite Explorer 6.

onto computer-based engineering models. The new and important raster editing allows users to fine-tune and enhance these scanned images as well as repair imperfections.

Bentley vice president of GeoEngineering, Jean-Baptiste Monnier, comments, "There is a wealth of untapped imaging information in the world that could make engineers and mappers much more productive. Our goal with the raster editing in MicroStation Descartes is to remove an imaging bottleneck and break open this 'world of images' to all who could benefit."

Specific raster editing features in the new MicroStation Descartes include despeckle, hole fill, line smoothing, custom brushes and erasers. Users can automatically draw raster elements by selecting a toggle To alternate back and forth between two states.

toggle - To change a bit from whatever state it is in to the other state; to change from 1 to 0 or from 0 to 1. This comes from "toggle switches", such as standard light switches, though the word "toggle" actually refers to
and using any of MicroStation's geometry creation tools. Support of imported file types, such as tiled TIFF, has been expanded and integration with MicroStation and Windows(TM) plotting has been improved.

MicroStation Descartes and MicroStation(R) are standards at engineering organizations and companies throughout the world. MicroStation 95, for example, is the standard engineering modeling system at 42 of the 50 U.S. state A U.S. state is any one of the fifty subnational entities of the United States, although four states use the official title "commonwealth". The separate state governments and the federal government share sovereignty, in that an American is a citizen both of the federal entity and  departments of transportation (DOTs). The Missouri Highway and Transportation Department, for example, recently standardized on MicroStation 95 and MicroStation Descartes, purchasing over 335 licenses of MicroStation 95 and 17 seats of MicroStation Descartes for image management. More on MicroStation Descartes

MicroStation Descartes includes four application components: Image Manager for image display, management, and plotting; Image Transform for image placement and document layout; Register for interactive image and vector warping; and, now, Image Edit for image editing Changing or improving graphics images. It typically refers to bitmapped images rather than vector graphics drawings. Using an image editor, images can be modified by an artist using pen, brush, airbrush and other "painting" tools.  and mosaicking, and enhancement. Mosaicking is the capability to stitch together several images, while assuring continuous tones. Warping is the capability to overlay and synchronize separate images or images and CAD-produced drawings.

MicroStation Descartes supports TIFF, CIT n. 1. A citizen; an inhabitant of a city; a pert townsman; - used contemptuously.

Images which help users design and analyze include aerial photographs, satellite imagery, engineering paper drawings, maps, or mylar sheets.

MicroStation Descartes also helps engineers and mappers create decision support documents, including site plans, plan drawings, corridor studies, and public hearing presentations. The imaging product works with all other MicroStation products and is a particularly good match for MicroStation GeoGraphics(TM), Bentley's new GeoEngineering product.
