Bentley Unveils MicroStation/J.

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 3, 1998--

Company Establishes New Category of Enterprise Engineering Modeling

Bentley Systems Bentley Systems, Incorporated, provides software for the "Design, construction and operation of the world's infrastructure". The company’s software serves the building, plant, civil, and geospatial vertical markets in the areas of architecture, engineering, construction (AEC)  Inc. (Exton, Pa.) Wednesday unveiled MicroStation/J(TM), the newest edition of its flagship product A primary product of a company, which is typically why the company was founded and/or what made it well known. For example, MS-DOS, Windows and the Microsoft Office suite have been flagship products of Microsoft. CorelDRAW is a flagship product of Corel Corporation.  and the new foundation of the Bentley Continuum.

MicroStation/J offers a wealth of new functionality derived from several sources: developments by the company over the past two years, proven technology from other world-class providers, as well as functionality from Bentley engineering products.

With a single-minded goal of boosting productivity through enterprise-wide engineering modeling, MicroStation/J is highlighted by three major advances: Parasolid(R) solid modeling, a native Java(TM) environment, and the engineering functionality of the MicroStation(R) TriForma(R), MicroStation Modeler(R), or MicroStation GeoGraphics(R) software products.

Dave Weisberg of A-E-C Automation Newsletter and Engineering Automation Report commented, "With MicroStation/J, Bentley has carved out a new category beyond CAD -- enterprise engineering modeling. The product and the concept boost productivity at all levels."

He explained, "Individuals gain easy access to the more productive user interface of 3D solid modeling, organizations move beyond just graphics to true engineering simulation, and global enterprises achieve long-sought-after information continuity with Java, the programming language of the Web."

Because MicroStation/J now incorporates the Java Virtual Machine A Java interpreter. The Java Virtual Machine (JVM) is software that converts the Java intermediate language (bytecode) into machine language and executes it. The original JVM came from the JavaSoft division of Sun. , enterprises can smoothly operate global extranets for engineering projects, connecting worldwide participants regardless of what's at their fingertips "Fingertips" is a 1963 number-one hit single recorded live by "Little" Stevie Wonder for Motown's Tamla label. These enterprises can also share `live' information between engineering applications and enterprise systems such as Oracle and SAP.

, president and chairman of Bentley, explained, "Large engineering projects face many forces of discontinuity, including their global nature and the diversity of information and expertise involved. Enterprises are asking us to deliver unifying software that fosters continuity rather than monolithic systems that breed further discontinuity."

He concluded, "MicroStation/J enables engineering enterprises to leverage their IT infrastructures with Java and achieve total information continuity."

The engineering configurations of MicroStation TriForma, MicroStation Modeler, and MicroStation GeoGraphics provide high-level engineering functionality in the areas of building engineering, manufacturing engineering Manufacturing engineering

Engineering activities involved in the creation and operation of the technical and economic processes that convert raw materials, energy, and purchased items into components for sale to other manufacturers or into end products for
, and geoengineering respectively.

This functionality raises the level of organizational discourse far above computer graphics and allows teams to computer-simulate features and functions of engineering assets as and after they are designed and built.

For example, the MicroStation TriForma configuration allows architectural firms to design buildings in more productive ways, using architectural concepts rather than combinations of lines and circles.

Instead of just steering an electronic drafting pen, architects tap the power of the computer to quickly explore alternative designs, to use analysis tools for calculating HVAC (Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning) In the home or small office with a handful of computers, HVAC is more for human comfort than the machines. In large datacenters, a humidity-free room with a steady, cool temperature is essential for the trouble-free  and building loads, and to automatically generate precise, critical specifications including floor plans, elevations, and bills of materials.

The Parasolid technology in MicroStation/J comes from Unigraphics Solutions Inc., a subsidiary of EDS (Electronic Data Systems, Plano, TX, www.eds.com) Founded in 1962 by H. Ross Perot (independent candidate for the President of the U.S. in 1992), EDS is the largest outsourcing and data processing services organization in the country.  (NYSE NYSE

: EDS), and is recognized as the leading solid modeler in capability, performance, and robustness. Bentley is the first major vendor to introduce this technology into A/E/C A/E/C Architect/Engineer/Contractor .

Noted industry analyst Dave Burdick, vice president at the Gartner Group, "The momentum pendulum has swung clearly towards Parasolid as the market-leading solution for NT- based solutions."

Bentley not only provides this world-leading technology to architects, building engineers, and mechanical/manufacturing engineers, but has implemented it so that 3D solids becomes a more productive method to users to interact with the visual image of their model.

The user interface surrounding Parasolid, called SmartSolids(TM), includes innovations for manipulating and visualizing (QuickVisionGL) solid models.

MicroStation/J also includes extensive new functionality beyond the "big 3" advances.

Many of these additional enhancements, such as web-enabled engineering, full OLE support, batch plotting, digital signatures, visualization, imaging, and image management were first made available to Bentley SELECT(SM) subscribers in the MicroStation SE edition.

Application developers will find MicroStation/J the platform of choice for developing engineering applications and customizations.

(TM) (Java MicroStation Development Language) programs and componentware can be as powerful and integrated with MicroStation/J as those written in MDL MDL - (Originally "Muddle"). C. Plus, because the reach of Java is greater, these applications can run across the enterprise and throughout project extranets.

User organizations, likewise, will find MicroStation/J easier and faster to customize and install into software projects.

Because Java is widespread throughout the software industry, talented programmers, development tools, and high-quality training for development are widely available -- a significant advantage for MicroStation/J projects over those using products that still require a proprietary language.

Finally, the component software structure of Java drastically reduces the software cost of ownership by eliminating the need to install and maintain applications on every client.

With the new MicroStation/J architecture, Bentley can further speed its pace of delivering product improvements.
