Bentley Unveils Line-up of Desktop Mechanical Design Automation Products; Six "Best-of-Breed" Products Combine with New MicroStation Modeler II to Create Industry's First Integrated Design and Analysis Solution at a Desktop Price.

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 14, 1995--Bentley Systems, Inc. today announced a line of desktop mechanical design automation products for professional designers.

The six "best-of-breed" products combine with the new MicroStation Modeler (TM) II solid modeler to create the industry's first integrated solid-based design and analysis environment at a revolutionary, desktop price.

Specifically, the new line-up is COSMOS/M DESIGNER(R) II from Structural Research & Analysis Corporation, DRAFT-PAK(R) Mechanical and DRAFT-PAK BOM from Baystate Technologies, ADAMS(R)/MS Motion and ADAMS/MS Mechanisms(TM) from Mechanical Dynamics, and ESPRIT(R)/MS PowerFold from D.P. Technology.

These products are tightly integrated into an "Analysis by Design" environment with a natural design loop and integrated product model. This desktop environment, for example, allows an engineer to design a part, apply loads and boundary conditions, analyze the part, and view the results -- with a single interface and a consistent set of commands and nomenclature. For the first time on the desktop, users can quickly explore design options and achieve optimal products.

Yoav Etiel, vice president of product marketing, comments, "By now, solid-based mechanical design tools are quite affordable and usable. However, the mainstream user has told us that analysis tools are just too expensive or too removed from design." Etiel adds, "Our new line-up of mechanical tools provides mainstream users with high-productivity design and powerful analysis capabilities -- all tightly integrated and at a desktop price."

David Weisberg, from the Engineering Automation Report, stated, "This integration of analysis and design software has become an important aspect of today's engineering environment. Bentley and its partners are well-positioned to provide the tools that will enable engineers to analyze product components as a design evolves rather than wait for subsequent verification." Mr. Weisberg continues, "Changes can be made in a timely and cost effective manner, rather than late in the design cycle when they would have a substantially more adverse impact on budgets and schedules."

The integration of these products into an "Analysis by Design" environment was performed using Bentley's MechanicalSpace, a full-featured integration platform for mechanical applications. Based on an open systems architecture, MechanicalSpace provides advanced solid, surface, and wireframe An umbrella term for a general outline of some structure. For example, the rough design of Web pages may be called wireframes.  platforms.

David Saulnier, product manager of Baystate, says, "MechanicalSpace is the future of mechanical CAD development. Among the development environments we've used, MechanicalSpace is best in terms of learning curve, speed of development, reusability, and extensibility. The software services of MechanicalSpace are not found in any other environment."

Summaries of the new line of products follow:

COSMOS/M DESIGNER II

COSMOS/M DESIGNER II is an integrated feature-based solid modeling and analysis system. It includes mechanical analysis and MicroStation Modeler II solid modeling capabilities. Its intuitive and fast design loop is highlighted by "point and click" load placement, full associativity, automatic meshing, "push button" solving, and integrated result visualization. COSMOS/M analysis options include stress, dynamics, thermal, fluids, and magnetics. The product also supports the ANSYS ANSYS Analysis System  and NASTRAN NASTRAN - NAsa STRess ANalysis program. A program for solving large stress analysis problems.

, comments, "COSMOS/M DESIGNER II offers designers the best solid modeling and the best analysis tools available, at one-third the price of high-end systems." He adds, "Previously, although analysis showed great benefits, its cost was too high and its use sporadic. COSMOS/M DESIGNER II revolutionizes mechanical design by opening the door to up-front analysis and optimization for all designers."

DRAFT-PAK Mechanical

DRAFT-PAK Mechanical offers a full set of industry-standard mechanical design parts and automatic geometric dimensioning and tolerancing Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing is a symbolic language used on engineering drawings and computer generated three-dimensional solid models for explicitly describing nominal geometry and its allowable variation. It is often referred to by the abbreviation, GD&T.  (GD&T). It is based on technology in use at thousands of sites and contains 2D, 3D wireframe, and 3D solid parametric versions of over 600 industry standard features, fasteners, and mechanical elements. Included are holes, pockets, bolts, screws, gears, bearings, and sprockets that can be visually previewed and dynamically edited. The product's integrated GD&T capability, which automatically creates manufacturing tolerances, supports industry drafting standards ISO (1) See ISO speed.

DRAFT-PAK BOM

DRAFT-PAK Bill of Materials The list of components that make up a system. For example, a bill of materials for a house would include the cement block, lumber, shingles, doors, windows, plumbing, electric, heating and so on.  (BOM) generates parts lists easily and accurately from MicroStation-based designs. BOMs can be formatted with customized templates and exported to an existing database/MRP system or placed on drawings. For ease-of-use, the product has user-definable defaults, configuration options, and easy customization of template options. Purchasing groups also benefit by using the generated bills of material and details as accurate and up-to-date order listings. For manufacturing, designers can add balloon notes to their exploded assembly drawings and place the bills of material on manufacturing drawings.

ADAMS/MS Motion and ADAMS/MS Mechanisms

ADAMS/MS Motion and ADAMS/MS Mechanisms simulate the kinematic kin·e·mat·ics
n. (used with a sing. verb)
The branch of mechanics that studies the motion of a body or a system of bodies without consideration given to its mass or the forces acting on it.
motion of mechanical assemblies. Users can evaluate motion paths, create realistic assembly motion, establish work space envelopes, locate lock-up positions, detect interferences between parts, and calculate joint reaction forces. Users create mechanical systems by simply adding joints and motion generators. These system definitions and the model data are automatically transferred to the ADAMS/Kinematics(TM) solver. Results can be graphically viewed in MicroStation Modeler II with special visualization and animation effects.

and metal stamping design. It automatically recognizes the faces of a folded 3-D model and guides the process of unfolding/folding a part design. PowerFold also includes advanced tools to handle transitional shapes for projects in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC (Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning) In the home or small office with a handful of computers, HVAC is more for human comfort than the machines. In large datacenters, a humidity-free room with a steady, cool temperature is essential for the trouble-free ) and automotive industries. It also offers advanced flat pattern development capability, forming simulation, and a materials database. Its simulation allows users to fold back flaps until a full three-dimensional model has been rebuilt.
