Bentley Acquires C.I.S.

Bentley Systems, Incorporated today announced its acquisition of the assets of Communications Information Software, Inc. (C.I.S.), an industry leader in communications network design and documentation software. The company's product FOCUSOne is used by more than half of the U.S. cable television market, including two of the largest cable providers.

First developed in 1985, C.I.S. software lets communications companies design, engineer, and document any type of broadband network. Created for Bentley's flagship desktop product MicroStation, the FOCUS and FOCUSOne software suites are widely used by consumer broadband providers, utilities, and government.

The technology facilitates the convergence of voice, data, and video services over a single connection to individual homes or offices. "The winners in the race to provide consumers and businesses with this triple play of services will be those who can engineer their networks with the least cost, and who can efficiently operate and manage them," said Styli Camateros, vice president, Bentley Geospatial.

Broadband providers will also benefit by combining C.I.S. technology with Bentley's broad portfolio of civil and geospatial products, said Jeff Eichler, C.I.S. founder and former CEO.

"This combination creates the most comprehensive solution available for providers of cable TV, fiber, and telephony networks," he said. Companies can implement a managed environment for their geospatial information, built on Bentley products and supporting the network lifecycle across planning, design, construction, operations, and maintenance. In a managed environment, valuable information is confidently shared, synchronized, and secured; all data can be leveraged throughout an asset's lifecycle and on future projects.

With the acquisition, Bentley becomes a software leader in serving the broadband industry. FOCUSOne is used at more than 300 network installations worldwide, including networks serving 1.5 million cable subscribers in New York. Bentley will expand FOCUSOne's presence in utilities, local governments, and fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) providers.

As part of the acquisition, all C.I.S. employees have joined Bentley. The group will continue to operate at its offices in suburban Atlanta, Georgia. The tool set for engineering Hybrid Fiber/Coax (HFC) and FTTP networks lets users lay out and document all aspects of inside and outside plant. Users can design, analyze, and maintain RF and fiber networks. The software builds an intelligent model that handles FTTP architectures and bandwidth management, and produces bills of material and other design documentation.

The software documents and manages conduit in an underground network; produces geographic, elevations, and cross-section views; and generates wall diagrams and other documentation for downstream work processes. The software also documents inside plant and network for head-end offices, points-of-presence, and central offices, allows connectivity between the inside and outside plant portions of the network, creates a 2D floor plan, allows drill-down into detail drawings and equipment, and generates schematic drawings.
