) announced today that its board of directors has elected Dr. Stephen D. Fantone chairman and Francis E. Dunne, Jr. treasurer of the corporation.

Fantone is the founder and president of Optikos Corp. (Cambridge, Mass.), a privately held engineering firm that specializes in optical product design and instrumentations. He has been a director of Benthos benthos: see marine biology. , Inc. since 1995 and succeeds Samuel O. Raymond, founder of the company and chairman since 1985. Raymond, who also served as chairman form 1965-1982, will now assume the tile of chairman emeritus e·mer·i·tus

The Benthos board of directors also designated April 11, 1997 for a Special Meeting of Shareholders to be held in lieu of its 1997 Annual Meeting.

Benthos designs, manufactures, sells, and services oceanographic and robotic equipment for underwater and exploration and research; and TapTone inspection systems for testing the seal integrity of consumer containers made of glass, metal, or plastic. The common stock of the company trades on the Nasdaq SmallCap market under the symbol BTHS.
