Trainer Williams said: "He has got nowhere to go over hurdles, as he's too high in the handicap, so we thought we'd try our luck over fences with him. He has jumped really well for Christian.

"Hopefully there are more races of this nature to be won with him, as he seems to like this faster ground."

Rippling Ring's trainer, Paul Nicholls, enjoyed better fortune in the novice hurdle, in which Pilgrims Lane carried the colours of the Oak Partnership to an easy victory over odds-on shot Nordwind.

The champion trainer's representative, Harry Fry, said: "We have waited for the better ground for him and, now that he's got his head in front, we'll keep him on the go over the spring and summer."

Winning trainer Charlie Longsdon dashed off to Towcester straight after the race, but said before leaving: "I was surprised by the mark he was given, to be honest, and it's not a great surprise that he's won so well on this better ground."
