Benfica's Binya banned for six matches

Uefa has handed the Benfica midfielder

In association football, a midfielder is a player whose position of play is midway between the attacking strikers and the defenders (highlighted in blue on the diagram).

While Brown avoided serious injury, the incident soured the 1-0 victory secured by Aiden McGeady's strike. Binya later expressed remorse Remorse

for the challenge, making a public apology and promising to contact Brown by telephone.

Uefa immediately opened a disciplinary case on the episode, and announced its verdict this morning, having deliberated on the Cameroon midfielder's actions yesterday. In a statement, Uefa described Binya's challenge as one which "seriously endangered en·dan·ger

the physical health of the opposing player".

Benfica can appeal against the decision, but if they are unsuccessful Binya will miss Benfica's remaining Champions League Group D matches against Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk. Benfica will then have to cope without Binya for their next four matches in Europe, which could be in the latter stages of this season's Champions League or Uefa Cup. The ban will also carry over to future seasons if, as seems likely, Benfica finish bottom of Group D.
