Benefits of Therapeutic Recreation: A Consensus View.

Introduction

Benefits of Therapeutic Recreation: A Consensus View (1991), published as the culmination of a 1990 conference, was a milestone in the field. In its summary of what we know about recreation's ability to contribute to therapeutic treatments, a recreation agenda was set.

In this issue of "Research Update," a comprehensive literature search reveals the progress of this agenda on verifying the benefits of therapeutic recreation since the 1990 conference--focusing on substance abuse treatment.

Impact of this Research

Research now confirms that participation in recreation and physical activity programs is an integral facet of substance abuse treatment and essential to comprehensive care. Services for reducing the incidence of alcoholism and drug dependency are continuously evolving and growing more sophisticated. Among the most important outcomes from including recreation in treatment programs appear to be enhancement of self-esteem, improvement of time management, relapse prevention, and stress reduction.

Here's some of the ways recreation and park agencies can utilize the findings from this review of current research.

How to Use this Research
