Benefit update: over-the-counter medicines.The Internal Revenue Service has ruled that Flexible Spending Accounts flexible spending account, n an employee reimbursement account primarily funded with employee-designated salary reductions. Funds are reimbursed to the employee for health care (medical and/or dental), dependent care, and/or legal expenses and are (FSAs) can pay for over-the-counter medicines with pre-tax dollars if their plans allow it. In either of the latter two cases, the drug costs are not eligible for itemized medical deductions. Companies planning to take advantage of this change must amend their plan documents if they do not include any language concerning over-the-counter medicines. The ruling should be beneficial for employees in 2004, especially with election and open enrollment periods now gearing up for most employers.
