He used the opportunity to consult with all the Cardinals attending the Consistory CONSISTORY, ecclesiastical law. An assembly of cardinals convoked by the pope. The consistory is public or secret.  of Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre Marcel-François Lefebvre (November 29 1905 – March 25 1991), better known as Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, was a French Roman Catholic bishop. Following a career as a missionary in Africa with the Holy Ghost Fathers, he took the lead in opposing the changes within the  (now deceased); and the questions linked to the dialogue between the Church and Islam. The Pope clarified that the meeting was also "open to other possible topics."

Some 20 Cardinals spoke on the question of Archbishop Lefebvre in the morning while the subject of Islam was discussed in the afternoon. The consultation was a new initiative on the part of the Pope.
