Bene! Gourmet Pizza closes shop, pulls out of downtown.

Bene! will focus its local efforts on remaining locations at Oakway Center off Coburg Road and at 2566 Willamette St. in south Eugene, the Cohens said. The company also has opened two locations in Denver in the past year.

The Cohens have moved to Denver and could not be reached for comment on Friday's closure of their downtown restaurant.

However, Kevin Cohen said in the statement that he hopes to expand the Oakway Center location and may open a north Eugene outlet if he finds a suitable site.

Meanwhile, the company will move its catering operations from the downtown location to its south Eugene outlet.

The Broadway restaurant's five employees all will be offered transfers to Bene! Gourmet Pizza's two other Eugene locations, Cohen said.

Cohen told The Register-Guard in February 2005 that his company was prepared to build a total of three new outlets in Denver by mid- mid-
pref.

Friday's announcement came as plans appear to be in the works for the International Society for Technology in Education to occupy the former Symantec building on West Broadway, and for software company Lunar LUNAR. There also has been much talk in recent months about a potentially massive retail and housing renovation in downtown Eugene, spearheaded by local developers Tom Connor and Don Woolley. So far, however, Connor and Woolley have not been able to secure all of the property they say they want for the project.

The Bene! downtown restaurant was in leased space in the Broadway Place retail and housing complex.
