Benchmarq announces Smart Battery Capacity Monitor IC and Level 2 Smart Charger With Dual-Battery Selector.DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 14, 1996--Benchmarq (NASDAQ/NMS:BMRQ) announced two new additions to its growing portfolio of products that follow the System Management Bus and Smart Battery Data specification: -- bq2091 Gas Gauge IC -- DV2043S7 Level 2 Smart Charger With Dual-Battery Selector. Based on Benchmarq's patented battery capacity monitoring technology, the bq2091 directly supports capacity monitoring for NiCd, NiMH, and Li- Ion battery chemistries. It uses the SMBus protocol that supports many of the Smart Battery Data (SBData) commands and also supports SBData charge control. Battery state-of-charge, capacity remaining, remaining time, and chemistry are available over the serial link. Battery charge state can be directly indicated using a four-segment LED display to graphically depict battery full-to-empty in 25 percent increments. The bq2091 is available to any OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and or battery VAR wanting to develop Smart Battery packs based on the SMBus specification. The bq2091 is packaged in a small 16-pin 150-mil SOIC (Small Outline IC) A small-dimension, plastic, rectangular, surface mount chip package that uses gull-wing pins extending outward. See gull-wing lead, SOJ and chip package. and -- together with the necessary external components -- can occupy less than 0.8 square inch of PCB PCB: see polychlorinated biphenyl. The bq2091 eliminates the need for an external thermistor Thermistor An electrical resistor with a relatively large negative temperature coefficient of resistance. Thermistors are useful for measuring temperature and gas flow or wind velocity. or resonator resonator /res·o·na·tor/ (rez´o-na?ter) 1. an instrument used to intensify sounds. 2. an electric circuit in which oscillations of a certain frequency are set up by oscillations of the same frequency in another . The DV2043S7 Smart Charger development system with Smart Battery selector handles switching between external DC and one or two battery packs. The DV2043S7 automatically switches system power to DC when available, and switches power between the two battery packs when a battery is removed from the system. It supports stand-alone or system control charging of one or two battery packs. The DV2043S7 incorporates a Benchmarq bq2054 Gas Gauge IC and a microcontroller A single chip that contains the processor (the CPU), non-volatile memory for the program (ROM or flash), volatile memory for input and output (RAM), a clock and an I/O control unit. for high-efficiency, low-ripple switch-mode design with high-side current sensing. The board's footprint is the size of a credit card. It provides a development environment for Smart Charger devices that comply to the 1.0 release System Management Bus, the Level 2 Smart Charger, and the Smart Battery Selector specifications. The data sheet, schematic, and de-bugged PCB layout allows designers to quickly implement the design in production systems. "Portable computer manufacturers may want to use the capabilities of the SMBus and Smart Battery data without locking themselves into a single battery supplier or limiting battery pack configurations," said Bill Bentley William John "Bill" Bentley (born October 21, 1947 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire) is an English former professional football player. He played as a left-back. Bentley is now a window cleaner in his hometown.[1] Notes 1. , Product Marketing Manager. "With the bq2091 and DV2043S7, companies now implement a complete charger/fuel gauge system allowing them to can pursue multiple suppliers and battery technologies for their systems," he added. Pricing and Availability The bq2091 is available now in a 16-pin 150-mil SOIC. Pricing starts from $5.68 in 10K quantities. The DV2043S7 development board is available now for $99 for unit quantities. About Benchmarq Benchmarq provides integrated circuits Integrated circuits Miniature electronic circuits produced within and upon a single semiconductor crystal, usually silicon. Integrated circuits range in complexity from simple logic circuits and amplifiers, about 1/20 in. (1. and modules for portable applications and applications sensitive to the loss of system power. Product lines include battery-management ICs and modules, real-time clock A real-time clock (RTC) is a computer clock (most often in the form of an integrated circuit) that keeps track of the current time. Although the term often refers to the devices in personal computers, servers and embedded systems, RTCs are present in almost any electronic ICs and modules, nonvolatile controller ICs and modules, and nonvolatile static RAMs. Benchmarq's products address the system designers' increasing requirements for high-performance solutions that are easy to use.
