BenQ Achieves Full Type Approval with Silicon Laboratories' Aero Transceiver.

Business Editors & High-Tech Writers

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 20, 2002

Silicon Laboratories Inc. (Nasdaq:SLAB) today announced that BenQ Corporation has achieved full type approval (FTA FTA
abbr.
Future Teachers of America
) certification with multiple GSM/GPRS designs that use Silicon Labs' Aero(TM) GSM transceiver. As the only 100 percent CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) Pronounced "c-moss." The most widely used integrated circuit design. It is found in almost every electronic product from handheld devices to mainframes.  RF front end for GSM applications, the Aero transceiver was selected by BenQ because it uses the fewest number of components, delivers the smallest footprint and provides the highest level of performance surpassing the stringent radio requirements set forth by the GSM/GPRS conformance specifications.

Having filed more than 40 patents on its innovative wireless technology, Silicon Labs continues to press the boundaries of integration and RF design. The Aero transceiver saves more than 50 percent in board space and 80 percent in component count, while also easing the design and manufacturing process.

"The compact size and high level of integration made the Aero transceiver the suitable solution for our new GSM products," said Irwin Chen, vice president of Networking and Communications BG of BenQ. "Due to the high level of innovation and competitive advantages of the Aero transceiver, Silicon Labs is providing BenQ with leading edge technology to further our growing position in the mobile phone market."

"BenQ's design and manufacturing execution has resulted in year-on-year growth in their mobile phone business," said Ed Healy, vice president of Silicon Labs. "Silicon Labs is very pleased to have been chosen to partner with BenQ on these exciting projects and looks forward to providing BenQ with leading edge technology in the future."

About Silicon Labs' Wireless Products

The Aero GSM transceiver provides a complete RF front-end for multi-band GSM digital cellular handsets in 100 percent CMOS process technology. The highly compact solution integrates the IF SAW filter, external low noise amplifiers (LNA LNA Low-Noise Amplifier

The Aero transceiver thus enables the design of a GSM radio with the lowest number of overall external components, 18 for dual-band and 22 for tri-band. The Aero transceiver is compliant with General Packet Radio Services (GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) The first high-speed digital data service provided by cellular carriers that used the GSM technology. GPRS added a packet-switched channel to GSM, which uses dedicated, circuit-switched channels for voice conversations. ) Class 12, supporting high data rate communications for Internet-enabled wireless terminals.
