Bemco Steel Industries is poised to take on a greater regional role following large-scale investments in equipment, the company says. Currently an overwhelming portion of its finished products are sold within Saudi Arabia but that could change once annual production capacity is raised to 30,000 tonnes per year by the end of 2009, executive director Carlo Amirza said. C[pounds sterling]While Bemco sees increased demand in the local market, the company is planning to become a regional player. Exports account for around 10 to 15 per cent of its total turnover and these mainly go to the GCC and Middle East markets,C[yen] Amirza said. The company produced 15,000 tonnes in 2007 against 12,000 tonnes in the previous year. Output for the first half of this year was 11,000 tonnes with expectations that the whole of the year would register 25,000 tonnes. Most supplies in 2007 were related to steel structures fabrication, storage tanks and stack structures. The tanks were fabricated as per API 650 and AWWA D100. The companyCOs repertoire includes design and engineering, procurement, surface preparation and treatment and site erection of the fabricated product. As well as structural steel, storage tanks and stacks, Bemco fabricates pressure vessels, pipes and pipe spools, silos, hoppers and HVAC ducts. Its services cover a gamut of sectors including power, desalination, gas and petrochemical plants and general industrial plants as well as fertiliser, cement and food processing plants. The company is working on several major jobs in steel structures including ones for the MasaCOa Extension (Safa-Marwa) of the Ministry of Hajj, the completion date for which is September, 2008; King Abdullah University Lab Building-Aramco (October 2008) and Safwa Cement (February 2009) as well as Qurayyah Power Plant, Saudi Electric Company (SEC); Development of the King Abdulaziz Endowment Project, Makkah, and Juaymah Gas Plant-Aramco (all by December 2008). In fields other than steel structures, its ongoing projects include mechanical erections, storage tank erection and piping installations for Power Plant 9 of SEC (September 2008); mechanical erections and piping installations for Juaymah Gas Plant-Aramco (December 2008); fuel and water storage tanks, air receivers and shop fabricated tanks for Qurayyah Power Plant, SEC (Jan 2009); air receivers and shop fabricated tanks for Shuqaiq Power Plant, SEC (July 2009). In the past few years the company has built steel supporting structures for boilers, stacks and monorail beams for AramcoCOs Petro-Rabigh project. It fabricated steel roof structures for buildings of the Saudi Ministry of Rural Development. Other major projects it accomplished were those for JamaratAa (Saudi Ministry of Public Works), the Doha International Airport (Qatari Ministry of Aviation), the Aweer Power Plant in the UAE and an exhaust gas system and steel structures forAa SECCOs Riyadh Power Plant No 9. Located near Jeddah, Bemco is an ISO3001:2000 and ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers)-certified company. The company was formed in 1965 as a mechanical and electrical contracting company. Huge investments in oil and gas have stimulated demand in the local market for steel structures and storage tanks, said Amirza.
