Belo buys Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer in Kentucky.


DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 4, 1995--A. H. Belo Corporation, owner of The Dallas Morning News, and Owensboro Publishing Company announced today an agreement in principle for Belo to acquire the assets of the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer, a daily and Sunday newspaper in Owensboro, Kentucky Owensboro is the third largest city in Kentucky and the county seat of Daviess County.GR6 It is located on U.S. Highway 60 about 32 miles southeast of Evansville, Indiana and is the principal city of the Owensboro, Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area. . The asset purchase is subject to certain conditions, including regulatory approval.

Judge Hager bought the Owensboro Inquirer after an unsuccessful bid for governor. The Hager family has owned the newspaper ever since. In 1929 the Inquirer, which had been founded in 1884, merged with the Owensboro Messenger, which had been founded in 1875. Today, the Messenger-Inquirer has a daily circulation of 33,363 and a Sunday circulation of 33,398 in Daviess and surrounding counties.
