This is a terrific recording with notable big-band dynamic contrasts, a soundstage that delivers a close-up perspective to the listener, and excellent focus. However, both settings required that the center level temporarily be backed off -3 dB below the standard Dolby reference level. The Jazz-Club mode of each processor was also workable, as was the Hall mode of the Outlaw receiver installed in my living-room system. However, perhaps the Classical/Opera mode of the big-room's processor worked best to generate a realistic sound with this material. This particular surround enhancement made a good-sounding disc into a great-sounding disc. --HF |
