The key statistics of the economy that reveal the direction the economy is heading in; for example, the unemployment rate and the inflation rate.
 can't always tell the entire story. Expenditures for training and education that increase the intangible assets of human capital are not accounted for on the balance sheet, only as costs on the income statement. Therefore, human capital is often understated when stating future corporate value.

Dr. Michael E. Echols, Vice President of Bellevue University Strategic Initiatives, has developed a formula for a company's use to determine not only their investment in intangible assets, but also strategies for turning investments in human capital into a competitive advantage.

Detailed models of Dr. Echols' formula are presented in his book, ROI (Return On Investment) The monetary benefits derived from having spent money on developing or revising a system.
