BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Bellevue University Mission statement
"The mission of Bellevue University is to provide quality liberal arts and career-oriented programs at undergraduate and graduate levels. Exceptional educational value and affordable access are provided to a diverse student body through efficient operation and
, one of the first universities nationwide to offer degree programs online, is applauding the actions of Congress today in lifting the so-called "50-percent rule." A few paragraphs attached to a budget bill has wiped out the requirement that colleges deliver at least half their courses in-class instead of online in order to qualify for federal student aid.

Bellevue University Provost Dr. Mary Hawkins said Congress has now recognized what some colleges and universities already know - that students increasingly prefer to take classes online rather than in the traditional classroom.

"We are getting to the point that more of our students are choosing online," Dr. Hawkins said. "It's the direction that higher education higher education

 is moving."

Currently, more than 38 percent of Bellevue University's student enrollment is online. The University expects that number to reach 50 percent within the next two years.

Bellevue University was one of the first universities in the country to offer online degree programs, in 1996. The University's College of Distributed Learning Distributed Learning means a method of instruction that relies primarily on indirect communication between students and teachers, including internet or other electronic-based delivery, teleconferencing or correspondence; (British Columbia, School Act, 2006).  is dedicated to the training of Bellevue University faculty in online teaching methods and the continued development of engaging, online courses through its proprietary Cyber-Active (R) Learning Platform.

"We know that we are providing the highest quality of online learning to our students. We're thrilled that changing this rule will allow our students to choose online learning without losing the ability to apply for federally subsidized sub·si·dize
