Bellcore technology fuels test of interactive video services for Swedish telephone company.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug.1, 1995--Telephone company customers in Sweden may soon have access to a full range of video services over ordinary telephone lines, thanks to technology developed in New Jersey by Bellcore.

Under a joint research collaboration with Telia, the Swedish telephone service provider, Bellcore's patented "Store and Forward" technology platform is the foundation for a new applications programming interface (API) which will enable Telia to try out video dial-tone services in subscribers' homes. These services will include video on demand with full VCR control, home shopping, Internet access, and games.

Telia also selected Bellcore to provide system integration services for its end-to-end video dial tone platform which utilizes unique technologies invented at Bellcore, and implemented on commercially available hardware and software.

The backbone of the system is based on 155 megabit-per-second interfaces to a generic asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) broadband network. Bellcore's "Store and Forward" architecture, used to control application delivery across the network, was created specifically to handle a diverse range of interactive video and multimedia applications. It offers significant improvements in efficiency over other systems.

Bellcore's Asymetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) technology will be used to provide full motion entertainment quality video over existing copper telephone lines. With the addition of an ADSL modem and set-top unit in a subscriber's residence, the new digital interactive service can be installed in a matter of minutes. The customer's analog telephone service continues to operate normally.

Waring noted that the experience gained through working with Telia to provide end-to-end systems integration will augment Bellcore's broadband deployment support services. These services include collaborating with a client's network architecture and equipment suppliers to facilitate early trial implementations and roll out of new broadband services.
