Bellcore Offers Solutions to Meet FCC Mandate for Wireless Number Portability; Enhances Advanced Wireless Services Portfolio.

ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 23, 1998--Bellcore today announced the expansion of its portfolio of products to meet the needs of wireless service providers as they implement federal requirements for delivering calls from their networks to other wireline or wireless telephones. Bellcore's Wireless Number Portability (WNP) solution includes two components--the Advanced Service Management System (ASMS) for number portability, and an enhanced Number Portability Database (NPDB) for storing and managing active ported subscriber information. The WNP solution can operate on a single platform using Bellcore's ISCP(R) family of Intelligent Network solutions.

Bellcore's WNP solution is designed to help wireless service providers meet the FCC's December 31, 1998 Phase I mandate to deliver calls from their networks to ported wireline subscribers anywhere in the United States. Phase II of the FCC program expands the requirement to include support for roaming and the ability to port numbers from other wireless service providers as well as between service providers.

Bellcore's ASMS gives service providers local service management capabilities to receive broadcast numbers from the Number Portability Assignment Center (NPAC) and provisions NPDB with active ported customer information. The ASMS also provides Service Order Activation (SOA) functions for managing the ported number. Bellcore enhanced NPDB enables wireless providers to query the database from mobile switching centers using IS-41 protocol messages. The same NPDB can be queried from wireline switches using AIN protocol. Nortel has tested and certified Bellcore's Number Portability Database as part of its Open Solutions Program.
