Bellcore Launches New Business Unit and Names Stephen G. Chappell Corporate Vice President.MORRISTOWN, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 3, 1997--Steven G. Chappell, an executive at Lucent Technologies, has been named Corporate Vice President and Group President of Business and Service Management Systems, a new Bellcore business unit created to meet growing demand for Bellcore software products. The appointment was effective yesterday. Chappell, who was a vice president in Communications Software (communications, software) communications software - Application programs, operating system components, and probably firmware, forming part of a communication system. These different software components might be classified according to the functions within the Open Systems at Lucent Technologies until his retirement earlier this week, will oversee the creation, development and implementation of Bellcore software, services and business solutions for the intelligent network, customer care and billing, Internet, and Year 2000 markets. He was named a department head in 1978, responsible for developing software for several large systems still deployed today. Promoted to director in 1990, Chappell commercialized several major systems at AT&T Bell Labs, including the UNIX system Noun 1.
