Bellcore Launches New Business Unit and Names Stephen G. Chappell Corporate Vice President.

MORRISTOWN, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 3, 1997--Steven G. Chappell, an executive at Lucent Technologies, has been named Corporate Vice President and Group President of Business and Service Management Systems, a new Bellcore business unit created to meet growing demand for Bellcore software products. The appointment was effective yesterday.

Chappell, who was a vice president in Communications Software at Lucent Technologies until his retirement earlier this week, will oversee the creation, development and implementation of Bellcore software, services and business solutions for the intelligent network, customer care and billing, Internet, and Year 2000 markets. He will report directly to Bellcore President and COO, Sanjiv Ahuja.

Chappell, 50, has broad technical experience in developing, testing and deploying software systems and applications. He also has extensive professional experience in bringing those products to market. He began his career as a member of technical staff at Bell Laboratories in 1969, and has held increasingly responsible positions in various software development areas. He was named a department head in 1978, responsible for developing software for several large systems still deployed today. Promoted to director in 1990, Chappell commercialized several major systems at AT&T Bell Labs, including the UNIX system and C++.

Chappell became vice president of AT&T's Wireless and Billing Operations Systems in 1990, where he expanded AT&T's sales into the wireless market and grew the commercial applications business. He was named vice president of Network Operation Systems in 1995. In this capacity he had responsibility for the AT&T operations systems that run the switching and transport communications networks. Most recently he was responsible for deployment of the full range of Operations Systems in Saudi Arabia.

Chappell holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, a M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Northwestern University and a Ph.D. from Northwestern in Computer Science.
