The technology forum, which challenges teachers to implement a cost-effective learning environment adapted to each child's individual learning aptitudes and goals, provides interactive demonstrations ranging from live videoconferences to intelligent robotics robotics, science and technology of general purpose, programmable machine systems. Contrary to the popular fiction image of robots as ambulatory machines of human appearance capable of performing almost any task, most robotic systems are anchored to fixed positions . The BellSouth grants allow educators to attend the symposium, and implement and share the knowledge gained at the conference within local schools.

"BellSouth has a long history of supporting educational initiatives that enable school systems to implement and use technology to better prepare students for their futures," said Joan Kratz, vice president of marketing for BellSouth Business. "This program is particularly significant because it provides teachers with tools they can share with fellow educators in school districts throughout their states."

The "Exploring the Future of Learning" program meets six key learning objectives:
-- Seeing Into the Future - Demonstrates next-generation learning and teaching applications for palm-sized computers.

-- Link for Democracy - Connects students from 27 different countries via videoconference for a broadcast debate.

-- Magic Book - Enables readers to enter a three-dimensional `virtual' story and interact with characters and settings.

"Using technology in the classroom is crucial to developing higher-order thinking Higher-order thinking is a fundamental concept of Education reform based on Bloom's Taxonomy. Rather than simply teaching recall of facts, students will be taught reasoning and processes, and be better lifelong learners.  skills, making education relevant to students and improving overall achievement," said Dr. Sandi Glass, education marketing manager for BellSouth Business. "Providing teachers with professional development they can then share with other teachers in their school fosters integration of curriculum and encourages collaboration among a diverse student population."

The two-day event, sponsored in part by BellSouth, is an in-depth, hands-on exploration of today's most promising emerging technologies and applications. The event features more than 40 projects from across the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America.
