 Carrier Survey: Tough Enough?"

BellSouth was honored with the survey's highest award for its frame relay A high-speed packet switching protocol used in wide area networks (WANs). Providing a granular service of up to DS3 speed (45 Mbps), it has become popular for LAN to LAN connections across remote distances, and services are offered by most major carriers.  service and ranked a close second in the leased lines category. Last year BellSouth took top honors for its leased lines data services and received high marks for timeliness of installation, repair and network monitoring The term network monitoring describes the use of a system that constantly monitors a computer network for slow or failing systems and that notifies the network administrator in case of outages via email, pager or other alarms. .

BellSouth was selected as the winner of Network Magazine's prestigious, best-in-class award by network managers from companies around the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. . The information technology professionals rated more than a dozen regional, national and global data providers and selected BellSouth as the best frame relay provider in the market.

"Winning this award is especially significant because it comes from our customers," said Fred Shaftman, president of BellSouth Business. "BellSouth is committed to providing our customers with the highest quality data services and expertise. Ranking no. 1 shows that our customers agree that we are an industry-leading data network solutions provider."

"BellSouth edges out the competition with its top showing in breadth of service, pricing, customer support, timeliness of installation and billing," said David Greenfield, International Technology editor for Network Magazine. "BellSouth has demonstrated its leadership among global and national competitors for the second consecutive year."

The survey rated carriers' performance in the following categories: meeting installation dates, troubleshooting networks and maintaining a "high-octane, battle tested" network. More than 4,000 Network Magazine readers ranked over 12 leading carriers in key categories including leased line, frame relay, ATM and private IP. Among the 12 leading carriers, BellSouth is the only Regional Bell Operating Company The Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOC) are the result of the U.S. Department of Justice antitrust suit against American Telephone & Telegraph. History  (RBOC (Regional Bell Operating Company) The Bell telephone companies that were spun off of AT&T by court order in 1984 (the Divestiture). Also known as the "Baby Bells," the initial seven RBOCs were Nynex, Bell Atlantic, BellSouth, Southwestern Bell, US West, ) to be ranked among the top three leased lines providers in this year's survey.

The independent survey results reflect BellSouth's innovative enhancements and dedication to its data solutions portfolio. BellSouth's continued commitment to providing customers with innovative data networking solutions has led a data explosion that resulted in data traffic surpassing voice. Two-thirds of the traffic on BellSouth's network today is data. The second quarter of 2001 marked the first time in BellSouth's history that data revenues surpassed $1 billion in a single quarter.

Earlier this year BellSouth announced the development of its Subrate T-3, a frame relay service providing bandwidth on demand up to 44.2 Mbps. This follows other recent enhancements including development of cutting-edge frame relay features that minimize downtime and BellSouth's extension of its voice over frame capabilities. Employing technologies that automatically reroute and prioritize data within the network, BellSouth bolstered the reliability of its frame relay service and increased the quality of voice over frame applications.

"BellSouth's deployment of the Subrate T-3, intelligent PVCs and priority PVCs empower companies to build an integrated data network," said Sandra Palumbo of the Yankee Group (the Yankee Group, Boston, MA, www.yankeegroup.com) A major market research, analysis and consulting firm founded in 1970 by Howard Anderson. It provides general consulting and strategic planning in the computer and communications field. . "The next-generation frame relay features demonstrate BellSouth's dedication to providing quality service and innovative solutions to its customers."

"BellSouth provides award winning customer service and comprehensive data solutions that our customers can count on to meet their changing business needs," added Shaftman.

The North American Carrier Survey results appear in the August issue of Network Magazine. The survey identified several trends, including a positive relationship between customer service and the size of accounts. It also points to a decline in ATM as a corporate enterprise service.
