Digital Storytellers allowed Dreher High School students to use desktop editing and streaming video technologies to bring the world a live account of WWII events by streaming the video they created over the Internet. "Digital Storytellers enables BellSouth to provide students with activities that help them learn technical, communication and research skills. As time passes, we lose the opportunity to share our veterans' stories. Technology provides a way to remember and celebrate the sacrifices these men and women have made." Digital Storytellers exhibits the power of integrating technology, networking and educational curriculum. Students interview veterans about topics in a war they have previously only read about in textbooks, Web sites and archives. Teachers then assist students in learning how to utilize and merge video editing and networking skills to create a living history story that can be used to educate students everywhere. "Digital Storytellers is true interactive learning," said Kathy Sutusky, Dreher High School information technology specialist. "It gives students the chance to participate in the educational process by learning about history while using state-of-the-art technologies." The Dreher High School Digital Storytellers history project is the first Digital Storytellers program launched by BellSouth. Next month, BellSouth will help twelve more teachers throughout the Southeast develop the skills needed to produce several more digital stories next year. Gary Rowe, president of inSitelearning served as a mentor to the student producers, bringing his extensive experience with interactive learning projects to the classroom. Rowe has produced electronic field trips for schools that have appeared on public television stations and cable systems nationwide. BellSouth has a long history of providing project based learning opportunities for students and teachers. Through the Education Gateway, programs such as ThinkQuest, Jane Goodall's Roots and Shoots Roots & Shoots is a program of The Jane Goodall Institute. It was started by Dr. Jane Goodall in 1991 with 16 high school age kids from Tanzania. Since then it has grown to more than 8,000 groups in 96 countries. and Eagle Watch provide teachers and students the opportunity to use technology to create Web sites, and to participate in projects that benefit the environment, animals and society. Students learn how the knowledge of math, science, language arts and history are relevant to work and future studies. The first Digital Storyteller project will be hosted on a server at South Carolina's Educational Television.
