The first transmissions of 100Gb/s Ethernet over optical have been revealed by Bell Labs, the R&D division of Lucent Technologies (NYSE NYSE

:LU), a new communications technologies company.

According to Bell Labs, it has broken through the transmission rates ceiling and determined two techniques with the potential to help deploy 100G Ethernet over optical systems. It claimed its research team was able to deliver a 107Gb/s optical data stream, representing 100Gb/s data transmission and a 7% overhead for error correction.

Bell Labs employed Duobinary Signalling which uses three electrical (positive, negative and zero) signal levels and requires less bandwidth than NRZ (Non-Return-to-Zero) A data transmission method in which the 0s and 1s are represented by different polarities, typically positive for 0 and negative for 1.  signals and enabled the optical 107Gb/s serial data stream to be created. In addition it used the integrated Single-Chip Optical Equaliser which compensates for inter-symbol interference resulting from limitations in modular bandwidth.

Bell Labs claimed enterprises are moving increasingly to 10Gb/s and said carriers seek to deploy 100Gb/s Ethernet in the MAN to transmit and multiplex high data levels in Ethernet format.
