Brinkman succeeds Arun Netravali, who was named Bell Labs president last October.

"Bill's demonstrated leadership has helped Bell Labs innovations quickly become Lucent products," Netravali said. "I'm confident of his ability to guide longer- term research while simultaneously advancing communications technologies in his new role."

As vice president, Brinkman will oversee the work of 1,200 Bell Labs researchers in computing, software, mathematics, communications science, physics, and engineering.

In his previous role as physical sciences research vice president at Bell Labs, Brinkman concentrated on converting technology from the labs into marketable products for business. Under his leadership, Bell Labs provided advanced components, technologies and processes to Lucent's microelectronics, wireless and optical communications businesses. He has overseen research on wireless geolocation, multiple-antenna wireless networks, optical amplifiers, add/drop multiplexers, and all-optical cross connects.

While concentrating on such product-oriented innovations, Brinkman also has maintained a world-class, long-term research effort that has been widely recognized with many prizes and awards.

Harry Bosco, president of Lucent's Optical Networking Group, notes that Brinkman has helped position Lucent as a leader in the optical networking space and "continues pushing us toward new ways of evolving technology plans and product ideas for metropolitan networks."

Brinkman has held numerous research-management positions at Bell Labs. From 1984 until 1987 he was vice president of research at Sandia National Laboratories Sandia National Laboratories, which is managed and operated by the Sandia Corporation (a wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Corporation), is a major United States Department of Energy research and development national laboratory with two locations, one in Albuquerque, New , Albuquerque, NM. He returned to Bell Labs as executive director of the physics research division in 1987.

Brinkman holds a graduate degree in physics from the University of Missouri, and spent a year as a postdoctoral fellow at Oxford University in England.

As a researcher, he has made fundamental contributions to condensed matter physics con·densed matter physics
