Bell Canada : Organization Change.

BELL(ME:BCE.) (TSE:BCE.) (VSE:BCE.) (NYSE:BCE) Bell Canada announced today that John A. MacDonald, president and chief operating officer, has decided to leave the company.

"I accept John's decision with great regret," said Jean Monty, chairman and chief executive officer. "John MacDonald has been instrumental in successfully steering Bell Canada through some very significant changes."

Mr. MacDonald joined Bell Canada as chief technology officer in November 1994. He became chief operating officer in May 1997 and president and chief operating officer in February 1998.

"My years at Bell Canada have been extremely challenging and rewarding," said John MacDonald. "I joined for what I thought would be a three-year assignment. It's taken a little longer but now Bell Canada is a more competitive and customer-focused company with a clear strategy, anchored by domestic and international alliances and a new labour agreement. The time is right for me to pursue new opportunities in emerging communications technology and spend more time with my family."

The company also announced that Mr. MacDonald's responsibilities will be assumed by Mr. Monty, effective June 1, 1999.
