Bell Atlantic and Lucent Enter Major Switching Pact.WARREN, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 10, 1997--Lucent Technologies and Bell Atlantic today announced a multi-year agreement that would result in purchases by Bell Atlantic of up to $1 billion of Lucent switching equipment, software, and other products over the next five years. As part of this multi-year agreement, Bell Atlantic will buy 5ESS (1) (Electronic Switching System) A large-scale computer from Lucent used to route telephone calls in a telephone company office. The 5ESS is a Class 5 central office switch, and the 4ESS is a Class 4 tandem office switch. (r) Switch hardware and software products from Lucent. The agreement also includes the conversion of a significant portion of Bell Atlantic's network from analog to digital and the switch interfaces needed to provide more sophisticated digital-based services.
