Bell Atlantic's new voice dialing service utilizes Texas Instruments technology.AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 6, 1995--Bell Atlantic announced today that it is launching a voice dialing service utilizing Texas Instruments' speech recognition technology. Regionwide rollout of the service, called Bell Atlantic(R) Easy Voice(SM) voice-dialing service, will begin with customers in the Northern Virginia Northern Virginia (NoVA) consists of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William counties and the independent cities of Alexandria, Falls Church, Fairfax, Manassas, and Manassas Park. suburbs of Washington, D.C. Three TI employees left the company in 1982 to start Compaq. Voice Dialing Services give users convenient hands- free access to frequently called numbers by simply directing the phone to dial the name or place they wish to call. The service works with any touchtone or rotary phone and doesn't require the purchase of additional equipment. Each customer can build a directory of up to 50 names. To place a call to a phone number in the directory, a customer picks up the phone and says, "Call Mike Smith," or "Call Joe's Pizza." The number is then dialed automatically and the network connects the call. "Deployment of consumer-oriented voice dialing services raises basic telephone service to a new level of simplicity and convenience," said Bill Eversole, vice president and general manager of Texas Instruments Communications and Electronic Systems. "The technology is easy to understand and customers quickly become adept at using it for easy, convenient calling." Bell Atlantic will charge residential customers $3.75 a month for Easy Voice with a 50-name directory. During a special introductory period, customers who sign up will receive the first month free and have normal one-time connection charges, where required, waived. TI Voice Service applications run on the TI MultiServe(TM) Platform, which is an industry-standard, UNIX-based system that incorporates TI's digital signal processors A digital signal processor (DSP) is a specialized microprocessor designed specifically for digital signal processing, generally in real-time computing.
