, noble-born Soraya is disguised as a servant in the Hrum army camp, trying to find her mother and brother. Jian, her half-brother, is trying to pull together and command what remains of the Farsalan army in order to defend Farsala. And clever Kavi, a traveling peddler peddler or hawker, itinerant vendor of small goods. In rural America peddlers carried their packs or drove a horse and cart from door to door.  and double agent, evokes the name of a legendary hero to ignite an underground Farsalan resistance movement. Their stories don't come together until the end, when they realize they must work together to achieve their common goal of defeating the enemy--setting the scene for the final volume, Forging the Sword, to be released in fall 2006.

Bell is a talented and thought-provoking fantasy author The definition of a fantasy author is somewhat diffuse, and a matter of opinion - Jules Verne considered H. G. Wells to be a fantasy author - and there is considerable overlap with science fiction authors and horror fiction authors. , though this is as much a tale of military strategy as of fantasy. She has a particular talent for presenting multiple perspectives, not just through her characters, but also on situations. For example, the Hrum, who resemble the army of the Roman Empire, are not all bad: unlike the noblemen who used to rule Earsala, they offer the rule of law and bring order and peace to conquered domains, though they do take slaves. Still, these teens want their country to remain free, with the chance for an independent new order, and readers will root for them all the way. Paula Rohrlick, KLIATT
