Belgium PM the EU man; POLITICS.


BELGIU M'S premier Herman van Rompuy Herman A. Van Rompuy (born October 31, 1947 in Etterbeek) is a Flemish politician and member of the CD&V (formerly called CVP). He was the Vice President of the CVP Youth from 1973 to 1975, from 1978 onward, he was a member of the National Bureau of the CVP, from 1975 to 1980 he  last night became the first president of Europe.

The deal in Brussels saw Britain's Baroness Ashton, 53, now EU Trade Commissioner, become Europe's first foreign policy chief.

Anthony Seldon, Mr Blair's biographer, said the former PM felt "deeply disappointed". Mr van Rompuy, 62, is barely known outside Belgium.
