Belgium's PTT Selects Redback Networks' SMS 10000 in Mass Deployment of Broadband Services.

Redback Networks Inc. (Nasdaq:RBAK), a leading provider of next-generation metro broadband and optical networking equipment, today announced that Belgacom is the latest European PTT to deploy the Redback's SMS(TM) platform, subscriber management system, in its broadband network. Belgium's national carrier has deployed the Redback(R) SMS 10000 to aggregate and manage high volumes of subscribers to its digital subscriber line (DSL) access services.

Belgacom has created a comprehensive portfolio of broadband services, including business and residential DSL access. The Belgian PTT first launched service in April 1999 and is now currently available to more than 85 percent of the population -- record coverage in Europe.

A mass residential and business user deployment strategy was the primary reason to select Redback's SMS 10000 technology. With both residential and business users on the same DSL network, Redback's unique multiple contexts feature allows Belgacom to recognize which user type is which and to implement the appropriate policies and service level agreements per user, per session.

Wim Steenhaut, vice president product management at Belgacom, said, "Without multiple contexts, we could not effect different policies for our residential user and business user packages, both for retail and wholesale partners. It also enables us to pre-provision for a default user type, which greatly speeds up the provisioning process.
