Belgium's KPN Selects RAD's ATM IAD To Support New SHDSL Services; Attractive Solution for Bandwidth-Hungry Small and Medium Enterprises.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

TEL AVIV, Israel--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 17, 2002

KPN KPN Koninklijke PTT Nederland (Royal Dutch Telecom)
KPN Konfederacja Polski Niepodleglej (Polish conservative party)
Belgium has chosen the LA-110 ATM Integrated Access Device An IAD is a customer premises device that provides access to wide area networks and the Internet. Specifically, it aggregates multiple channels of information including voice and data across a single shared access link to a carrier or service provider PoP (Point of Presence).  (IAD (Integrated Access Device) A device that multiplexes a variety of communications technologies in the customer's premises onto a single telephone line for transmission to the carrier. It also demultiplexes the incoming streams into their respective channels. ) from RAD Data Communications RAD Data Communications (also known as "RAD") is a privately held corporation, based in Tel Aviv, Israel, that designs and manufacturers specialized networking equipment. It was founded in 1981 by Zohar Zisapel and his brother, Yehuda.  for deployment in its new SHDSL SHDSL Single-Line High-bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line

access line. It will be used by KPN Belgium to enable a wide variety of services over SHDSL, including leased lines, LAN interconnect, ATM, Frame Relay and Internet access. These services are scheduled to become operational this fall, and will be available to customers throughout the country.

"SHDSL technology enables symmetrical transmission at rates up to 2.3 Mbps over two wires or 4.6 Mbps over four wires, to a range of 5 kilometers, a solution that is particularly attractive for bandwidth-hungry SMEs," explains Peter Scheer, Senior Consultant at Meta Group. "Unlike large businesses, SMEs generally cannot afford the high costs of a high-bandwidth STM-1 connection, while, unlike residential customers, their data and voice needs cannot be fully satisfied by ADSL See DSL.

High Bandwidth Without Digging for Fiber

KPN Belgium plans to install the LA-110 at the customer premises. Depending on their particular service package, customers will connect their own routers and/or PABXs to the LA-110's user ports. The product will then multiplex the traffic and send it out from its uplink over copper wire belonging to Belgacom, the incumbent carrier, to a KPN DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexor) A central office (CO) device for ADSL service that intermixes voice traffic and DSL traffic onto a customer's DSL line. It also separates incoming phone and data signals and directs them onto the appropriate carrier's network. See DSL.  located at the incumbent's closest central office. The DSLAM will translate the required bandwidth to dedicated PVCs (Permanent Virtual Circuits) for transmission over KPN's Frame Relay network.

"The advantage to this solution is that it provides customers with high bandwidth without any digging and without having to install any fiber cabling whatsoever," states Patrick Bours, Engineering Manager at KPN Belgium.

"In increasing numbers, operators such as KPN have begun planning the introduction of SHDSL services," notes Sammy Elalouf, Senior Sales Manager for Belgium at RAD Data Communications. "In particular, operators are anxious to leverage their large installed base of DSLAMs as a source of additional revenue, and SHDSL services, such as leased line services for the SME market, will allow them to do just that." There are more than 20 million SMEs in Western Europe alone.

Interoperable with all Major DSLAMs and Voice Gateways

Interoperable with all major DSLAMs and voice gateways, the LA-110 is especially suited to the demands of the SME (1) (Small and Medium-sized Enterprise) See SMB.

environment. "It is an ideal product solution for KPN because it can be connected to all its existing DSLAMs over SHDSL," Elalouf adds. The product offers ATM multiservice and management capabilities, guaranteeing Quality of Service (QoS) and traffic shaping.
