Belgium: the real home of golf.

IT'S a shocking claim during the Open - but according to a German academic golf did not originate in Scotland.

Dr Heiner Gillmeister, sports historian at the University of Bonn The University of Bonn (German: Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn) is a public research university located in Bonn, Germany. Founded in 1818 the University of Bonn is nowadays one of the largest universities in Germany. , claims golf was probably first played in continental Europe, probably by the Belgians or the Dutch.

Scotland's claim as being the cradle of golf rests on a 15th century Act of Parliament when King James II of Scotland James II of Scotland (October 16 1430, at Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh – August 3 1460) reigned as king of Scots from 1437 to 1460.

James II, the son of James I of Scotland and of Joan Beaufort (daughter of John Beaufort, 1st Earl of Somerset and of Margaret Holland),
 banned football and golf.

Dr Gillmeister believes ``golf'' in Scotland was a predecessor of modern hockey.
