Created in the 1974 local government reorganization, the county embraced the Birmingham conurbation and comprised seven metropolitan districts: Walsall, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Sandwell, Birmingham, Solihull, , it was revealed today.

The Belfry scheme was unveiled in June 2007, with a pounds 200 million facelift aimed at creating the Midlands' only five-star hotel, providing a major boost to the complex's golf facilities.

Plans were announced for a brand new hotel to be built behind the current building while other proposals included a new PGA (1) (Professional Graphics Adapter) An early IBM PC display standard for 3D processing with 640x480x256 resolution. It was not widely used.

The existing Belfry would be replaced by a new hotel with 500 luxury bedrooms, and a new leisure complex, including a swimming pool, gym spa and treatment facilities.

The five-year scheme would mark one of the biggest single investments in a leisure project in the Midlands for many years. A source said: "The scheme has been put on hold and a decision will be taken during the early part of next year regarding a revised construction timetable.

"This is entirely as a result of the recession, although the commitment to build the new hotel is still there.

"It is very difficult, it is a huge investment and it's not one you can do by halves. The bad news is that it is on hold but the good news is that the Quinn Group are still committed to build it.

"The golf course continues to be very popular and the site is already the home of the PGA."

Borough Council approved the project in the early part of 2008 following an intensive consultation programme and the scheme was originally due to be completed by 2012. The Belfry - the only venue in the world to host the Ryder Cup four times - was bought by the Irelandbased Quinn Group in February 2005 in a pounds 186 million deal.
