ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 22, 2004

BelAir Networks, the leading supplier of cellular LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  infrastructure solutions, expanded its product portfolio with the introduction today of a new product that extends the functionality of its patented, multiple, point-to-point wireless mesh See wireless mesh network.  system.

The BelAir100 is a two-radio cellular LAN platform that accepts the same radio modules as the original BelAir200 platform introduced in October 2003. The BelAir100 is more compact, simpler and lower cost than the BelAir200. It can be deployed in BelAir systems to terminate the mesh or as a mesh edge node where the full functionality of the four-radio BelAir200 is not required.

"The BelAir100 is a compact product that is a complementary addition to the BelAir200 system. It uses the same management framework and provides the same wide-area Wi-Fi access coverage we've designed into the larger platform," said Phil Belanger, vice president of marketing, BelAir Networks. "The BelAir100 gives service providers additional flexibility in designing carrier grade city-wide networks and offers a more cost effective way to provide complete coverage for standalone stand·a·lone

The modular BelAir100 will be available in many different configurations. Each unit features a rugged outdoor enclosure enclosure (inclosure) n. land bounded by a fence, wall, hedge, ditch or other physical evidence of boundary. A typical configuration will include one access radio module and one backhaul radio module using the integral antennas. Any combination of two radio modules is possible, although some will require the use of external antennas.

Currently BelAir offers two radio modules -- a high performance access radio module that operates in the 2.4 GHz band and a backhaul radio module that is based on IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  802.11a in the 5 GHz band. Radio modules supporting other standards will be available in future releases.

For outdoor applications, the BelAir100 can be mounted directly on light poles in parking lots or on city streets. For indoor applications, it can be mounted directly on a wall and project a 5 GHz backhaul link to other BelAir units outside the building or provide Wi-Fi access to clients indoors.

The BelAir100 will be available for initial deployments in July 2004 and will be shown at the BelAir Networks booth at CTIA Wireless 2004 this week.
