Beijing University of Post and Telecommunications: Deal establishes China's foremost telecoms research lab.

BEIJING, CHINA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 8, 2000

Broadband market leader Newbridge Networks (NYSE:NN)(TSE:NNC.) today signed an agreement with the Beijing University of Post and Telecommunications (BUPT) to establish one of China's most advanced telecommunications test and development centers.

The new lab will be equipped with more than U.S. $1 million of advanced telecommunications hardware, allowing thousands of students and researchers at the University to have access to the latest equipment and tools. BUPT is a key national university for technology and science training with numerous projects funded directly by the Ministry of Information and Property. For many years the University has been responsible for training a large number of China's IT professionals, many of whom have risen to key positions within government and industry.

Many of China's key post and telecommunications bodies have standardized their networks on Newbridge(r) equipment. China Post, the State Postal Bureau of the People's Republic of China, selected Newbridge switches in 1998 for a nationwide ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) backbone network spanning more than 31 provinces. More recently Guangdong Post and Telecommunications Authority (GPTA) chose Newbridge Networks to supply more than 128 high-end multiservice switches for a provincewide frame relay network spanning more than 100 towns and cities.

Equipment implemented by the lab includes the following Newbridge equipment: the 36170 Multiservices Switch, fully equipped 3600 MainStreet(r) Bandwidth Managers, DTU equipment and the 46020 Network Manager. The lab's networking environment allows for a number of simulated networking environments, from low capacity narrowband to broadband systems capable of carrying voice, video and data simultaneously.
