An introduction to gender issues in Namibia Namibia (nämĭb`ēə), officially Republic of Namibia, republic (2005 est. pop. 2,031,000), c.318,000 sq mi (823,620 sq km), SW Africa.  

The first paper in this publication reviews Namibia's record with international gender conventions and examines national and local gender policies and programmes of nongovernmental organisations. It gives considerable attention to legal reforms implemented since the 1995 World Conference on Women held in Beijing. The second paper looks at how international and national policies are interpreted by women and men in various Namibian communities. It reveals a generally negative attitude by men towards law reform promoting gender equality, which remains a major challenge to women's empowerment em·pow·er
