Beggars not the real nuisance; VIEWPOINTS.

AS someone who is actively involved with caring for homeless and vulnerable people on the city streets, I am very concerned with the plans to use Asbos to remove them from the streets ("Beggars hit with Asbos", July 29).

There are very few who actually harass harass (either harris or huh-rass) v. systematic and/or continual unwanted and annoying pestering, which often includes threats and demands. This can include lewd or offensive remarks, sexual advances, threatening telephone calls from collection agencies, hassling by  people but just sit there in hope.

A much bigger problem are those with plenty of money who are deemed acceptable because of the business they bring to the city.

Drug and alcohol abuse is not a pastime of the homeless alone but indulged by the so called "respectable revellers" every weekend who cause far more mess and problems.

You only have to venture into the city centre on a Friday or Saturday night to witness the results. Revellers are responsible for a vast majority of the vomiting vomiting, ejection of food and other matter from the stomach through the mouth, often preceded by nausea. The process is initiated by stimulation of the vomiting center of the brain by nerve impulses from the gastrointestinal tract or other part of the body. , fouling, discarded fast food and its packaging, bottles and glasses, violence and more, causing real health hazards that wouldn't be allowed elsewhere, and in open defiance to the powers that be.

I don't hear people complaining about this. Why? Because between the times the revellers go home and the shoppers arrive a major clean-up has taken place - swept under the carpet.
