Beethoven: Violin Concerto A violin concerto is a concerto for solo violin (occasionally, two or more violins) and instrumental ensemble, customarily orchestra. It doesn't take more than a single sitting to realize that this is among the most commanding performances of Beethoven's Violin Concerto one is likely to find. For the first few minutes I thought Kremer's playing was a bit heavy-handed, but I was soon won over by what turned out to be a strong, persuasive interpretation. Kremer is helped by conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt, who has often struck me as leaden, supporting with a strength and elegance I had heard evidenced earlier in the year in his complete Beethoven symphony cycle. The Chamber Orchestra of Europe is a smallish group but recorded at a moderately close distance they produce a big supportive sound. Teldec's sonics are slightly dry and narrow, especially when compared with my favored Szeryng/ Haitink Concertgebouw recording (Philips Solo), but Teldec produces, nevertheless, a clean and natural overall image.
