GATESHEAD must stop pressing the "self-destruct button" if they are to avoid the "downfall" of highscoring defeats.

That's the message from Graeme Armstrong after the Tynesiders bowed out of the FA Cup at Brentford last night, conceding five goals for the second time in four days.

Having lost 5-3 at Stevenage Borough in Blue Square Premier on Saturday, Gateshead travelled to Griffin Park Griffin Park is a football ground situated on Braemar Road in Brentford in the London Borough of Hounslow, West London. It has been the home ground of League Two side Brentford since it was built in 1904.  in upbeat mood after holding the League One side to a 2-2 draw in the original first round clash.

Yet though they started well in west London West London is the area of Greater London to the west of Central London. Although it is only ambiguously defined, it is one of the most economically active areas of London outside of the centre, containing significant amounts of office space along with Heathrow Airport and many of , two goals - from Ben Strevens Ben Strevens (born May 24, 1980 in Edgware) is a professional English Football player currently signed to Dagenham & Redbridge F.C. in the Conference National. He plays as a striker or attacking midfielder.  and Charlie MacDonald Charles Lea "Charlie" MacDonald (born February 13 1981 in Southwark, England) is an English footballer, currently playing for Southend United. At the end of the 2006-07 season, he had scored 27 goals for Gravesend & Northfleet making him the second highest goal scorer in the  - in three minutes just before half-time left them with a mountain to climb.

And within seconds of reducing the deficit through Armstrong's first of two - the other a late consolation - Gateshead again conceded, to MacDonald again, before Myles Weston's late double sealed the visitors' fate.

"It was a little bit of a carbon copy of what happened at Stevenage on Saturday," Armstrong said.

"We started so well, the crowd started to get on their backs and their lads were arguing amongst themselves. Then we just hit the self-destruct button and within five minutes just before halftime we were 2-0 down.

"It's obviously a horrible time to concede goals and against a League One side it's difficult to come back from a two-goal deficit.

"Then again, we got the goal back, which gave us a little bit of a lifeline, but again concentration levels at a critical time cost us and that's been our downfall.

"It's really difficult trying to react to the kind of situation we put ourselves in, it's difficult to pick lads up. We know how hard it's going to be.

"We can't do what we've done tonight, not just against League One opposition but against Conference sides too. We can't keep giving goals away the way we have done, it's too easy.

"We're losing games in five-minute periods when we relax and lose our concentration, and it's killing the game for us. It's difficult to keep coming back from those."

Of his own two-goal performance, Armstrong added: "As a striker you're always trying to score goals so I'm really happy with my personal performance, it's just really disappointing that it couldn't contribute to a win for the team.
