Bees' double edged sword.

Byline: Brian Dick

BEES' skill for applying clouds to silver linings has continued in the build-up to tomorrow's trip to London Welsh.

, with last year's leading try scorer Simon Hunt at the vanguard.

But on the other, the player-coach must decide upon a replacement for the departed Mark Woodrow, who announced on Wednesday his decision to leave the club.

Woodrow blamed off-field instability for his decision to move to Viadana but it will be Earnshaw's task to identify the right man to bring stability on the pitch.

With Woodrow's back-up Ricky Aley injured, he will choose between Ryan Tomlinson and the more experienced Rod Petty, both of whom played in last weekend's narrow loss to Bristol. Whichever he plumps for one thing is clear to Earnshaw - Bees cannot afford to mourn their departed play-maker.

With just one point from their first two matches B&S cannot afford to leave West London West London is the area of Greater London to the west of Central London. Although it is only ambiguously defined, it is one of the most economically active areas of London outside of the centre, containing significant amounts of office space along with Heathrow Airport and many of  empty-handed.

"Woody going is not the be-all and end-all," Earnshaw insisted.

"Someone is going to have to step up to the plate and take the role and assume the goal-kicking duties. That is the reality at this club, we have just got to get on with it. It will give Ryan or Rod a chance to show what they can do.

"How much will we miss Woody? We'll find out on Saturday."

Tomlinson appeared at outsidecentre against Bristol and while his defence was suspect, he carried well with ball in hand and made some telling breaks.

Australian Petty, meanwhile, is an outstanding footballer who has played fly-half for Stourbridge and Bees and is well used to running level-two teams. Concerns over his decision-making make him better suited to inside-centre, however.

At least Earnshaw has some familiar faces returning from injury in the backs.
