Beefed-up patrols cite 10 for DUII.

Increased police patrols for those driving under the influence after Saturday's Duck game Overview
The duck game is a series of questions and answers that are repeated. The entertaining aspect of the game is both that the questions and answers can be funny in various different ways and that the people playing the game might begin to forget their lines.
at Autzen Stadium The stadium is tucked between the Willamette River and Coburg Hills. The uniquely shaped bowl blends in with the wooded Eugene landscape. The shape also allows for unique acoustics, making it one of the loudest stadiums in NCAA Football for its capacity.  netted a flock of suspected drunken drivers, Eugene police said.

A total of 10 people were cited with driving under the influence of intoxicants from 6 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday. During the same time frame the previous weekend, when there was no home game, just four people were arrested for DUII DUII Driving (while) Under the Influence of Intoxicants , police spokeswoman Melinda Kletzok said.

At least six of the citations were related directly to the game, police say. Four people were stopped as they left the stadium, and two were arrested after they drank and watched the game off site, police Capt. Pete Kerns Coordinates:

But the high tally of DUII arrests should be linked to the increased presence of police, not to an increased problem with tailgating Tailgating

patrols simply meant more drunken drivers were slipping by, Kerns said.

The issue of tailgating has captured the attention of fans, who are not allowed to consume alcohol on privately owned lots that are the bulk of parking around Autzen.  to private lots. The move is supported by the police, who say their sparse sparse - A sparse matrix (or vector, or array) is one in which most of the elements are zero. If storage space is more important than access speed, it may be preferable to store a sparse matrix as a list of (index, value) pairs or use some kind of hash scheme or associative memory.  staffing levels make enforcing a ban on drinking in private lots impossible.

Instead, tactics such as saturation patrols - which place an extra 12 to 15 officers from the Eugene police, Lane County Sheriff's Office and Oregon State Police on the road - help hold those who abuse alcohol at tailgates accountable.

"It would take many officers to address the unlawful drinking, but with a smaller amount of officers we can have a greater impact on the very serious offense of drunken driving," Kerns said.

Before the saturation patrols, officers at Autzen were devoted to traffic control and providing basic security at the stadium, a service paid for by the UO to the tune of $470,000 a season, leaving only a few traffic units to catch drinking drivers, he said.

The increased patrols are funded by a combination of state grants and operations budgets, Kerns said, although he could not yet say what the total cost may be.

Police plan to hold DUII patrols "every home game for the foreseeable future," he said.

The Ducks' victory over Fresno State made for a celebration that gave police a "very interesting night," Kletzok said.

At one point, a sergeant making a DUII arrest on the 2100 block of West 11th Avenue saw a suspected drunken driver blaze by, driving on his rims with blown-out tires, Kerns said. The man was later arrested.

In another case, a tow truck driver was arrested for DUII after arriving to tow an impounded car while allegedly under the influence of stimulants Stimulants

Inside the stadium, 57 fans were ejected for various alcohol-related reasons, police said.

Kerns said that number is lower than many games, during which 100 to 150 people will be thrown out.

"But of the 55,000 to 60,000 people who attend those games, it's less than 1 percent," he said. "The UO has a great home crowd; UO football attracts a loud and energetic home crowd."

Three people were arrested Saturday, and two were cited for criminal offenses inside the stadium. Two alcohol-related crashes occurred during the night, neither resulting in injury or death.
