Beechwood volleys sink Boat for title; TENNIS: Earlsdon side snatch victory in dramatic style over their arch rivals.

Byline: Alan Poole

BEECHWOOD claimed the Coventry & District men's title in dramatic style when they toppled Warwick Boat Club on the final day of the season to squeeze home by a single set.

The Earlsdon outfit went into the showdown trailing their arch rivals Arch Rivals is a basketball arcade game created by Midway in 1989. The game billed itself as a "Basket Brawl." It was also included on Midway Arcade Treasures 2 for the PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube and Midway Arcade Treasures Deluxe Edition for the PC.  by two points and knowing that they had to win by at least 3-1 and concede no more than two sets in the process.

And they bolstered their chances by drafting in local favourite Maniel Bains - ranked 21st in Britain and 920th in the world - for his league debut.

It was 1-1 after the first round of matches in front of a bumper crowd as Bains and club coach Richard Allen overwhelmed Gavin Henderson Gavin Henderson is a British musician. He is principal of Trinity College of Music (TCM) and the Artistic Director of Dartington International Summer School. Among other posts, he lists the following:  and Leon Hillard 6-1 6-1, but Paul Martin and Hans Enoksen kept Warwick hopes alive with a hardearned 7-5 6-4 victory over Ian Hughes and Jon Ison.

That left Beechwood no margin for error - and they rose to the challenge magnificently with a brace of 6-4 6-2 wins to finish level on 44 points and snatch the verdict on sets, 95/29 to Boat Club's 94/29.

Boat Club had already sealed the ladies title, so the main interest in the final week of competition was at the other end of the table. Beechwood will fly the Coventry flag in the Warwickshire play-off against the Birmingham League champions in September, but this Sunday they take on Cardiff's Rhiwbina in the AEGON team tennis regional play-off.

Leamington 2nds were doomed several weeks ago, and Warwick, after just a single season in the top flight, will join them in the drop to Division Two.

This was after suffering a 3-1 defeat at Leamington 1sts that confirmed the home side's third position.
