Alagiah, presenter of the Six O'Clock News, has held the unpaid post at the Fairtrade Foundation for seven years.

But he has been told BBC impartiality rules mean he must resign the position.

In the charity's magazine, Alagiah writes: "Senior BBC colleagues believe Fairtrade represents a potential conflict of interest which could undermine my impartiality."

The BBC have refused to provide Fairtrade with a formal reason for the move.
